the most misunderstood. It powers British Airways, Iberia,
Aer Lingus and Qatar Airways, and because you can shuffle Avios
between those four accounts at no cost, a single balance can unlock flights right across the oneworld
alliance. The catch is that where and how you redeem matters enormously: the same
Avios can be a bargain on a short hop or a partner airline, and a poor deal on a long-haul British
Airways flight once the fuel surcharges land. This guide covers how Avios works in 2026, how to earn
it, how to get real value — and what to do with a balance you’ll never spend.

What are British Airways Avios?

Avios is the points currency of The British Airways Club (the program formerly known
as the Executive Club) and its sister programs at Iberia, Aer Lingus and Qatar Airways. You earn Avios
by flying, by spending on co-branded and transferable-points credit cards, and through shopping and
dining partners. You then redeem Avios for reward flights on British Airways and across the
oneworld alliance — American Airlines, Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair,
Japan Airlines, Alaska Airlines and more.

British Airways prices its own reward flights on a distance-based model with
peak and off-peak dates, charged per flight segment rather than for the whole trip.
That structure is what creates Avios’ famous short-haul sweet spots — and, on long-haul BA
metal, it’s paired with the surcharges we’ll flag below.

How to earn British Airways Avios

For U.S. collectors, most Avios come from credit cards rather than from flying. The big four ways:

• Transferable points (1:1). Avios is a transfer partner of nearly every major U.S.
  flexible-points program — Chase Ultimate Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards,
  Capital One, Bilt, Wells Fargo, U.S. Bank and Bank of America — almost all at a
  1:1 ratio. Chase and Amex frequently run transfer bonuses to
  Avios (25–30% is common), which is the moment savvy collectors top up.
• The British Airways co-brand card. The British Airways Visa Signature
  Card (issued by Chase) earns bonus Avios on BA, Aer Lingus and Iberia purchases and runs a
  large welcome bonus; it also offers a Travel Together Ticket after high spend.
• Flying oneworld. Paid flights on British Airways, American, Qatar, Iberia, Aer
  Lingus, Cathay, Finnair, Alaska and other oneworld carriers earn Avios based on fare and distance.
• Shopping, dining and everyday partners. The Avios eStore, dining programs, hotel
  partners and the occasional survey or lifestyle promotion round out a balance.

Because so many bank programs feed Avios, it’s one of the easiest currencies to accumulate quickly
— which is also why so many people end up with far more Avios than trips.

How to redeem Avios (and the surcharge trap)

Redeeming Avios is where value is won or lost. Three things to understand in 2026:

• Reward Flight Saver caps the cash. On British Airways-operated
  flights booked through The British Airways Club, Reward Flight Saver lets you pay a fixed, low amount
  of taxes and fees — as little as roughly $1 each way on intra-Europe hops
  — instead of the full carrier-imposed surcharge. It’s one of the best reasons to hold Avios.
  Note it applies to BA metal only, not partner flights.
• Long-haul BA business class carries heavy surcharges. Redeem Avios on a long-haul
  British Airways flight outside Reward Flight Saver and you’ll typically face
  carrier-imposed surcharges of several hundred dollars — commonly in the
  $600–$1,000 range round-trip in business class. A 176,000-Avios round-trip
  London–New York business award can look great until that cash bill lands.
• Partners can slash the surcharge. Flying a partner instead of BA metal often means
  far lower fees. The same transatlantic route booked on Aer Lingus can carry a
  fraction of the surcharge a British Airways flight would — which is exactly why experienced
  collectors route around BA’s own long-haul metal.

Avios sweet spots

Used well, Avios delivers outsized value. The redemptions worth knowing:

• Short-haul economy on BA metal with Reward Flight Saver. Cheap Avios pricing plus
  a capped ~$1–a–few–dollars fee makes intra-Europe hops from a UK gateway a
  classic bargain.
• Aer Lingus transatlantic economy. Nonstop East Coast and Chicago flights to
  Ireland have started around 13,000 Avios each way off-peak — with far lower
  surcharges than British Airways metal.
• American Airlines short-haul with Avios. Distance-based pricing shines here:
  around 12,000 Avios from Miami to Caribbean islands, roughly
  20,000 Avios economy from Los Angeles or Phoenix to Hawaii, and short domestic hops
  that undercut cash fares.
• Qatar Airways Qsuite business class. One of the best business-class products in
  the sky, bookable with Avios — a premium-cabin redemption where the value per Avios can climb
  well above the baseline.
• Iberia off-peak transatlantic. Iberia’s Avios pricing between the U.S. and Madrid
  is often lower than BA’s on comparable routes, with more reasonable fees.

What are British Airways Avios worth?

Independent 2026 valuations put Avios at roughly 1.2 to 1.4 cents each: The Points
Guy values Avios at 1.4¢ (June 2026), and NerdWallet pegs British Airways Avios
at about 1.2¢ as an economy median. Award Travel Finder frames the real-world
range as roughly 0.8p for short-haul economy up to 1.5p+ for business and first —
so premium-cabin and partner redemptions land at the high end, while surcharge-heavy long-haul BA
awards drag toward the low end.

Those are redemption values — and only real if you find award space on your dates, book
a trip you actually wanted, and steer clear of the fuel surcharges. Deduct a $700 surcharge from a
long-haul business award and the effective value per Avios can collapse. Between ongoing devaluations,
those carrier-imposed fees, and the simple fact that Avios earns you nothing while it sits, the “paper
value” and the value you’ll actually capture are often two very different numbers. That gap is exactly
