The 2026 guide to Emirates Skywards — the four tiers, every way to earn miles,

TL;DR

  • Emirates Skywards is the loyalty program of Emirates (and partner flydubai),
best known for A380 First Class with an onboard shower spa.
  • Miles are worth roughly 1.0–1.2¢ each (TPG 1.2¢, NerdWallet ~1.0¢) —
but heavy carrier surcharges on premium awards eat into what you actually capture.
  • The big catch: Skywards Miles expire 3 years after you earn them,
and — unlike most U.S. airlines — you can’t reset the clock by earning or redeeming.
  • 2026 transfer landscape devalued hard: Chase dropped Emirates entirely, Amex and
Citi went to 5:4, Capital One to 4:3. Bilt is the last 1:1.
  • If you’ll never burn the balance, you can sell your own Skywards miles for cash
    paid fast, PayPal-first, no fees.

Emirates Skywards is one of the most aspirational airline loyalty programs in the
world — the currency behind that famous Airbus A380 First Class suite, the onboard shower spa
and the cocktail bar at 40,000 feet. But Skywards is also one of the trickier programs to actually
get value from: awards carry hefty cash surcharges, and the miles run on a hard three-year clock that
most people don’t realize they can’t reset. This guide covers how Skywards works in 2026, how to earn,
how to redeem for the most value, what your miles are really worth — and what to do with a
balance you’ll never spend.

Emirates Skywards miles — earn, redeem for First Class, or cash out

What is Emirates Skywards?

Skywards is the frequent-flyer program of Emirates, the Dubai-based carrier, and
its sister airline flydubai. You earn Skywards Miles by flying Emirates and flydubai,
by transferring in points from a handful of bank programs, and through partner airlines and shopping.
You then redeem those miles for award flights — in economy, business or that legendary First
Class — on Emirates, flydubai and a network of about 19 partner airlines
including Qantas, Japan Airlines, Korean Air and Air Canada. Note that Emirates is not in one
of the three big global alliances, so its partner list is its own bilateral network rather than an
alliance-wide one.

Skywards elite tiers

Skywards has four tiers, earned with Tier Miles from flying Emirates and flydubai:

Tier How to reach it Headline perks
Blue Join the program Base earning; no lounge access
Silver 25,000 Tier Miles +30% bonus miles, Emirates lounge access, priority check-in
Gold 50,000 Tier Miles +75% bonus miles, Business Class lounge access, priority boarding
Platinum 150,000 Tier Miles + a First/Business qualifying flight +100% bonus miles, Home Check-in in Dubai, First Class lounges worldwide, miles don’t expire while Platinum

Status doesn’t just earn you more miles — since May 2025, only Silver, Gold and
Platinum members can book Emirates First Class awards
. Blue members are shut out of the
headline redemption entirely.

How to earn Skywards miles

There are three main ways to build a Skywards balance:

The 2026 transfer shake-up — read this before you transfer anything.
Skywards used to be a 1:1 transfer partner across the board. Not anymore.
Chase Ultimate Rewards dropped Emirates entirely on October 16, 2025.
Amex Membership Rewards and Citi ThankYou now transfer at
5:4 (1,000 points → 800 miles), and Capital One moved to
4:3 on January 13, 2026 (a 25% cut). Bilt Rewards is the only major
currency still transferring 1:1.
If you moved a big balance in before these changes, you’re
holding miles that cost you more to acquire than they’re worth today.

How to redeem & the sweet spots

Emirates prices awards by route, cabin and reward type — Saver (lowest miles,
limited seats), Flex and Flex Plus (more miles, more availability).
There’s no simple flat chart, so the official Miles Calculator is the only reliable way to price a
specific trip. The redemptions worth knowing:

The redemptions worth knowing

Heads-up — the surcharge tax: Emirates levies large carrier-imposed
surcharges on award tickets, and it raised them again in 2026 — long-haul
premium-cabin awards to the Americas can carry roughly $1,000+ in cash surcharges per
leg
. Those fees are paid on top of your miles and quietly drag down the real cents-per-mile
you capture. It’s the single biggest reason a “free” Emirates First Class seat often isn’t as free
as it looks.

What are Emirates Skywards miles worth?

Skywards miles are mid-pack airline currency on paper. Independent 2026 valuations put them around
1.0 to 1.2 cents per mile: The Points Guy values them at
1.2¢ (June 2026), and NerdWallet pegs the baseline near
1.0¢ — rising to about 1.2¢ when you book roughly 90 days out, and
ranging anywhere from about 0.5¢ to 3.4¢ depending on cabin and route. A standout A380
premium-cabin redemption can look great in cents-per-mile before surcharges; after the cash
surcharges come off, the value you actually pocket is usually lower.

Balance Approx. redemption value @ ~1.1¢
50,000 miles ~$550
100,000 miles ~$1,100
250,000 miles ~$2,750
500,000 miles ~$5,500

But those are redemption values — and only real if you actually book a trip you wanted
anyway, find Saver award space on your dates, accept the surcharge, and do it before the miles expire.
Miles don’t earn interest, surcharges keep climbing, and the transfer partners keep devaluing. A
balance you never burn is worth nothing. That gap between “paper value” and “value you’ll actually
capture” is exactly why a cash-out market exists.

Emirates Skywards: pros & cons

What if you can’t use them? Sell your Skywards miles for cash

Skywards miles are fantastic if you’re flying Emirates First Class out of Dubai. But for a lot of
people, the smarter move is to sell your own miles for cash — especially if
you’re in one of these situations:

Cash For My Miles has bought miles and points since 2004 and holds a
4.8 rating on Trustpilot. You’re selling your own miles — here’s how
it works:

Frequently asked questions

Do Emirates Skywards miles expire?

Yes. Skywards Miles expire three years (36 months) after you earn them, and — unlike most
U.S. airline programs — you cannot keep them alive by earning or redeeming.
The clock is hard. The only exceptions are holding Skywards Platinum status or being the primary
holder of an Emirates Skywards credit card in good standing. Because the deadline is fixed, many
members lose miles they meant to use; if you won’t fly in time, cashing out turns idle miles into
money now.

How much are Emirates Skywards miles worth?

Independent 2026 valuations put Skywards miles at roughly 1.0 to 1.2 cents each — The Points
Guy values them at 1.2 cents and NerdWallet near 1.0 cents (about 1.2 cents when booking around 90
days out). Premium-cabin awards can look higher per mile on paper, but Emirates’ heavy carrier
surcharges reduce the value you actually capture once you pay the cash fees.

Can I sell my Emirates Skywards miles for cash?

Yes. Cash For My Miles buys your own Skywards miles for cash — you get a same-day quote,
secure verification, fast PayPal-first payment, and no fees taken from your payout.

Why are Emirates award tickets so expensive in surcharges?

Emirates adds carrier-imposed (fuel) surcharges to award tickets, and it raised them again in
2026 — long-haul premium-cabin awards to the Americas can carry roughly $1,000+ in cash
surcharges per leg. These are paid on top of your miles. Fifth-freedom routes like JFK–Milan
carry much lower surcharges, which is why they’re a popular sweet spot.

Can I still transfer credit card points to Emirates Skywards?

Some, but the rates devalued in 2025–2026. Chase Ultimate Rewards dropped Emirates entirely
on October 16, 2025. American Express and Citi ThankYou now transfer at 5:4 (1,000 points to 800
miles), and Capital One moved to 4:3 on January 13, 2026. Bilt Rewards is the only major currency
still transferring at 1:1.

How fast do I get paid for my Skywards miles?

Payouts go out fast, PayPal-first, after a quick and secure verification step — with no fees
taken from your payout. Start with a same-day, no-obligation quote to see your offer.
