Miles & More is the loyalty program of the Lufthansa Group, shared across Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Discover Airlines and Eurowings. Members earn award miles by flying the group and its Star Alliance partners, through the Miles & More co-brand credit card, and through partners such as hotel programs, then redeem them for flights across the group and partner airlines. Award miles are separate from the qualifying points that count toward Frequent Traveller, Senator and HON Circle status.
Two things make a large balance harder to hold well. First, since June 3, 2025, awards on Lufthansa Group flights are priced dynamically, tied to cash fares, while Miles & More also passes on fuel surcharges, so premium-cabin awards can carry significant taxes and surcharges due at booking on top of the miles. Second, award miles expire after 36 months unless protected by elite status or an active Miles & More credit card.
The program is best known for Lufthansa First Class, which members can book much further ahead than partner-program members. But if you do not fly Lufthansa or Star Alliance, the surcharges outweigh the appeal, or your balance is drifting toward expiry, selling your own miles can turn an idle balance into a payout on your timeline.
