How United PlusPoints upgrade certificates actually work, what each segment costs, the 2026 expiration and award-ticket rules that catch people out — and how to cash out PlusPoints before they expire unused.
United PlusPoints are an upgrade certificate currency — completely separate from MileagePlus miles, the currency covered in our United MileagePlus guide. Where miles buy you a free flight, PlusPoints only upgrade an existing ticket to a higher cabin — you can’t book an award flight with them, and you can’t use ordinary miles to do what PlusPoints do.
PlusPoints are earned exclusively by Premier Platinum and Premier 1K/Global Services members — United’s top elite tiers. Reaching Premier Platinum delivers 40 PlusPoints. Reaching Premier 1K adds another 280 PlusPoints on top of that. 1K members can also earn additional PlusPoints beyond the standard allotment — for every 3,000 Premier Qualifying Points (PQP) earned past the minimum required for 1K status. A meaningful 2026 change: as of January 2026, PQPs earned from credit card spending now count toward those extra PlusPoints for the first time, not just PQPs from flying.
Because they’re earned only at the top of United’s elite ladder, PlusPoints are inherently scarce — most MileagePlus members will never hold any.
PlusPoints costs vary by route type and the size of the cabin jump. Costs apply per one-way segment on your ticket — a connecting itinerary within one direction (say, a domestic leg feeding an international flight) counts once for that direction, but a round trip needs PlusPoints applied each way.

Historically, PlusPoints only worked on paid tickets, and the owner had limited ability to apply them to someone else’s reservation. That changed on February 1, 2026: all MileagePlus members became eligible to have a PlusPoints upgrade applied — by the PlusPoints owner — to their United-metal segments, including when traveling on a United MileagePlus award ticket. It’s a meaningful expansion of who can benefit from a PlusPoints balance, whether that’s gifting an upgrade to a family member or applying one to an award trip that previously wouldn’t have qualified.
PlusPoints are valid only through January 31 of the year after they’re earned. PlusPoints earned anywhere in 2026 expire on January 31, 2028 — a firm cutoff, with no extension option the way some programs let you pay to extend miles. Combine that hard deadline with the fact that only the top 1-2% of MileagePlus members earn PlusPoints at all, and it’s easy to end up with a balance that doesn’t match your actual travel plans in the window before it expires — too many for the trips you have booked, or earned on a route/cabin combination you won’t fly again before the clock runs out.
Because PlusPoints aren’t sold by United to the public and can’t be freely transferred between members the way miles sometimes can, there isn’t an independent “cents per PlusPoint” market valuation the way TPG or NerdWallet publish for MileagePlus miles. What’s clear is that PlusPoints are scarce and valuable relative to ordinary miles — only top-tier elites earn them, and each one buys a real cabin upgrade on a specific, often expensive fare.
